50 miles in a month: a simple plan

50 miles in a month sounds big until you break it down. It is about 1.7 miles a day, or 12.5 miles a week.

At a glance

  • About 12.5 miles a week.
  • Any activity counts, so mix walking, cycling and swimming.
  • Plan your sessions on a calendar.
  • No cut-off time on Running Mad challenges.

Three ways to split it

  • Every day: a 25 to 35 minute walk.
  • Four days a week: about 3 miles each time.
  • Weekends plus two short weekday sessions: two longer outings at the weekend and two shorter ones midweek.

Mix your activities

Any activity counts, so you can walk, jog, cycle, swim or use a machine at the gym. You log the distance you actually did. Mixing activities spreads the load and keeps things interesting.

Keeping it going

  • Put your sessions in your calendar like appointments.
  • Find a buddy, or bring the dog.
  • Log each session as soon as you finish so the total keeps moving.

Catching up without getting hurt

If you miss a few days, do not try to double up two days running. Add 10 to 15 minutes to a few of your next sessions instead.
