A half marathon is 13.1 miles (21.1 km). You do not have to run it. Plenty of people walk the whole way, and in a virtual challenge you choose the route, the day and the pace.
At a glance
- A half marathon is 13.1 miles (21.1 km)
- About 3¼ to 4⅓ hours at 15 to 20 minutes a mile
- Walk it in one go or split it over several days
How long does it take to walk?
At a steady walking pace of 15 to 20 minutes a mile, 13.1 miles takes roughly 3 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 20 minutes. A virtual challenge also lets you split it: walk it in one go, or spread the miles over several days.
Build up gradually
- Walk most days, then make one walk a week longer than the rest.
- Add a mile or so to that long walk each week until you are comfortable at 9 or 10 miles.
- Wear in your shoes and socks on training walks, never on the big day.
- Take water and a snack for anything over an hour or two.
- New to longer distances, or have a health condition? Check with your GP first.
